Terrorist shop April 16, 2007

It’s that time of the month when i have ideas… I mean, i’ve had it for a couple of years, I think, and it’s still good…

We have an ecommerce solution see? It’s nice, has all kinds of features… But can’t compete with the prices out there. It might do more, be better, more scalable, more configurable, but the best e-commerce options out there are free! ;) (well, until you want to change something, then you’ll find out how much a free thing costs). More to the point, ours is expensive, not the most expemsive, but, it comes with our team behind it. We’re not just selling software, we’re selling regular updates, improvements, new features everytime you need them at decent prices, graphics, we’re selling an IT dept, actually… for a fraction of the cost of owning one as an online seller / distributor, it works like that with memoryc.com… They don’t complain, we don’t complain, s-all good.

So, how do we advertise that? We create a novelty shop… a terrorist shop, but funny… with the ability to buy people, weapons, tanks, knifes, propaganda, pentagon codes, suicide bombers, configure death squads, etc…
A nice layout, we have something that we never end up using with Che in the header ;)

Visitors would have access to the backend and be able to screw everything (a big button to restore db available to everyone…). This is obviously some work, not only to do the programming, cause that’s simple, we have a good structure, but we need content, categories, all types of things… and we don’t know if this is going to work… we’d have to finish updating our sites, create a site showcasing the product, create the terrorist shop, start promoting it… hope that we’ll get some clients for the real deal.

Ah yeah, hope noone gets too pissed at us! ;)

How much mail should one read in a vacation? I only read the subjects. Been gone 4 days, got the mails on my phone, read the subjects, more than 60 mails to be replied, addressed to me, wanting from me. I didn’t sleep that well… Long zombie dream.

I came in today, opened the mails, all CC’s that didn’t involve me that much, some followups, nothing major, nothing important. Down to about 8 mails to be processed. Still alot of work, but I hate mails, these days, bad news come by e-mail.

I didn’t chose to install the software on a subdomain or a new domain name because I feel that the point of the blog is to belong to a community. So I joined the wordpress community. I didn’t join wordpress to the amorphys community… And I like the wordpress community, lots of cool blogs, the gaijin one cracks me up!

It’s crazy, we haven’t updated our sites since 2004, looking back at the work we did it’s like looking at photographs, some clients are still with us, going strong, some have dissappeared, some changed their lifestyles so completely it’s hard to imagine they ever wanted a websites when they own a bar in Thailand. It’s a weird feeling, because, in the end, we did care about their sites…

Where do we draw the line between managing and micromanaging? April 5, 2007

Do you let someone make stupid mistakes that you can foresee? Do you let them learn on themselves? The age old question. As a web designer turned programmer turned manager the problem is that, after 4 or 5 years of not doing everything myself, I still think I can do a better job than most… which I can’t, of course. So, the question is, do i assign a task and only check it when it’s done or poke at it while it’s not done?  Besides the obvious time problem, there is the issue of independence. Obviously I’d like for everybody to to their stuff well, but if I check them and direct them all the time they’ll become reliant on this, they won’t think for themselves, they’ll become angry little robots ;) . But I still need the job done well and quickly… so i guess it’s just a matter of instinct… how do you teach someone instinct?

Why a blog (manifesto) April 4, 2007

Everybody blogs, some more successfully than other. There are several reasons to blog: boredom, hobby, marketing, money, communication, etc. I’ll try to do it for marketing and communication, give partners and clients an insight into our company.

There are many things I’d like to talk about, managing, clients, how stuff is done, why, plans, strategies, day to day life. I probably won’t. I’ll try to be honest though, as much as I can. It’s hard not to blab on a blog, after all, I’m talking to myself here most of the time, no?
