Where do we draw the line between managing and micromanaging? April 5, 2007

Do you let someone make stupid mistakes that you can foresee? Do you let them learn on themselves? The age old question. As a web designer turned programmer turned manager the problem is that, after 4 or 5 years of not doing everything myself, I still think I can do a better job than most… which I can’t, of course. So, the question is, do i assign a task and only check it when it’s done or poke at it while it’s not done? Besides the obvious time problem, there is the issue of independence. Obviously I’d like for everybody to to their stuff well, but if I check them and direct them all the time they’ll become reliant on this, they won’t think for themselves, they’ll become angry little robots
. But I still need the job done well and quickly… so i guess it’s just a matter of instinct… how do you teach someone instinct?
